The Men’s Fencing Club hosted Rutgers, Lafayette and RPI this past sunday at the Stifel Fencing Salle. Cornell defeated all three to improve its season record to 8-0. The foil and sabre squads remained undefeated as well, with foil looking to threepeat as MACFA champions this year. The Big Red will return to action on February 12th at Drew University against MACFA’s B region which includes SIT, NJIT, USMA, Hunter College, and Yeshiva University.
On November 19, the Cornell Men’s Fencing Club travelled to Haverford College and competed at the first MACFA meet of our schedule. We went undefeated beating Haverford College, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland College Park, William and Mary, and University of Virginia. We had not defeated Haverford in 2 years.
The Big Red opened their season this weekend at the 33rd annual Temple Open in Philadelphia, PA. With nearly 100 fencers per event, Cornell fenced off against a number of strong Varsity programs such as Penn State, University of Pennsylvania, UNC Chapel Hill, Johns Hopkins and NYU. Making one of the best showings in recent years, Mike Fotinatos captured a top 8 finish while Zach Silversmith, Nick Heiner, and Harrison Fox finished in the top 16.
Cornell hosted its first-ever USFA event this Saturday at Willard-Straight Hall, an epee tournament that drew 35 fencers from all over the Western NY area. Many members of the Cornell Men’s Fencing Team and Cornell Recreational Fencing Team participated, 5 of which were able to secure finishes in the top 8 or above. Among the undergraduate Men’s team fencers participating were Mike Fotinatos, Dave Smith, Bryan Mills, Nick Heiner, Benjamin Jaeger and Tim Gao.
