Kicking off 2017 with its first tournament of the year, the Cornell Men’s Fencing Team competed alongside the Women’s Varsity Fencing Team at the Cornell Invitational on January 28th. The men took on Lafayette (Division I) and Carnegie Mellon, going 16-11 against both schools. The win against Lafayette marks the Men’s third win against a varsity program this season. Foil led the charge, posting an overall record of 16-2 for the day, with Junior Michael Mauer and Sophomore Owen Sconzo both going undefeated. The sabre squad also saw some impressive performances from Freshmen Eric Sun and Chris Mulvaney, who picked up some solid victories despite being new to sabre.

As Freshman epee fencer Kevin Wang describes the competition’s high pressure, yet motivational atmosphere: "Fencing in front of the entire team reminded me of a type of pressure I had not had in a while, one that lifted me when I was winning and pushed me to work harder when I was losing. Even when I did lose, I didn’t feel like I let anyone down. My teammates were there to support me and advise me on what I should have done. We definitely had some fun times watching each other and props to Eric and Chris for going out of their way and filling in for saber."

Senior epee fencer, and team captain, Jake Silverman also comments on the Big Red’s team dynamic: “This is my first meet back at Cornell since returning from abroad and I already see clear growth in the team both on and off the strip. I am really proud of how the team did; every member of our team fenced and we showed that we have strong breadth of talent throughout our team.”

Junior foil fencer Michael Mauer also returned from abroad this semester, and had this to say about the team’s enthusiasm for this semester: “The team was really fired up. I think that everyone is excited to keep pushing the momentum from last semester, so it’s great to be back fencing for Cornell after a semester abroad.”

With a strong performance at the Cornell Invitational under their belts, the Men’s Team is gearing up for their next MACFA competition at Drew University this Sunday.
