Big Red fencers see solid results at PSU

The Cornell Men’s Team competed at the Penn State Garret Open this weekend.  The only club team registered at the event, they fenced against many elite varsity teams, such as Penn State, Ohio State, Princeton, Yale, Notre Dame, Harvard, Drew and UNC Chapel Hill.

Final Results:

      The Big Red foil squad began first led by captains Mike Fotinatos ’12 and Nick Heiner ’12 and supplemented by sophomore Alex Lo.  Fotinatos went 2-2 in his pool, while Heiner went 2-3.  Both were promoted to the second round of pools, while Lo, scoring six touches, moved to the consolation round.  The remaining foilists struggled in the second round, with both Fotinatos and Heiner going 1-3.  Although Heiner was eliminated, Fotinatos managed to hang on and was promoted by one touch into the third pools.  He repeated his 1-3 record here, missing the direct elimination tableau.

          Also off to an early start, the Cornell epeeists fought hard but were ultimately all eliminated in the first round and were placed in the consolation round.  Notable results came from Tim Gao ‘12, who with only a year’s worth of experience, took down a “B” in his pool and then was edged out by another B-rated fencer by a close score of 15-12 after receiving a BYE.  Wen Xuan Lim ‘12 won two of his DEs before being taken out by an "A".

           Although the only saberist attending the competition was freshman Ben Jaeger, he achieved excellent results, reaching the third round of pools before being eliminated. After many close bouts, he went 2-4 in his first pool, and survived the second with a 1-4 record and a high indicator. 

           Cornell celebrates greatly improved results from last year’s competition, in which every fencer was eliminated in the first round.
