Fotinatos and Jaeger win RPI Fall Open; Fotinatos earns B09
Two members of the Cornell Men’s Fencing team saw success this past weekend at a USFA tournament at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Both Mike Fotinatos '12 and Ben Jaeger '13 showed flawless performances in their respective weapons, while Fotinatos also placed 7th in saber.
Fotinatos went 4-0 in the foil pools, receiving only three touches. He progressed through the Direction Elimination tableau, edging out A-rated Benjamin Hogan in the finals. The first place finish earned him a B09.
Both Fotinatos and Freshman Ben Jaeger moved on to fence the saber event, Jaeger going undefeated in his pool (5-0) and Fotinatos going 3-2. This seeded Jaeger 1st and Fotinatos 9th after pools. Jaeger receiving a bye, Fotinatos won his bout to get into the top 8. Unfortunately, the two Cornell fencers were forced to face each other in the next round. Jaeger prevailed, defeating Fotinatos by a score of 15-11. He then went on to defeat two C’s to win the event, claiming the gold medal by an indisputable margin of 15-6.
